Gabe’s Story
To know Gabe is to love Gabe! He is so many things….happy, comical, intelligent, spiritual, kind, mature, gifted, kind-hearted, talented and brave. He is a soccer player, an artist, a musician and an excellent student. And now he is a cancer survivor.
In September of 2009, as a 10th grader, Gabe began running a low grade fever and feeling very tired. The symptoms continued for twelve days and although his blood work looked good, we knew something wasn’t right. Gabe’s doctor ordered a chest x-ray, which led to a CT scan and the almost immediate diagnosis of a lymphoma. He was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN where the diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma was confirmed.
Gabe completed chemotherapy and radiation and was declared “disease free” in February of 2010. But only five months later the disease was back! The doctors determined that the best course of treatment now for curing Gabe was extensive chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. In order to do the transplant, we would need a donor.
Adding to our stress and worry was discovering that no one in our family was a match for Gabe, nor were there any matches in the national registry. We worried and prayed and recruited everyone we knew to get registered. While there are still no perfect matches in the U.S. registry, it appears that a match may have been found from an international source. We are praying this works out for Gabe but we are still pleading with everyone we know to get registered to become a bone marrow donor. The relief we feel to know that our son may have a chance at a cure is impossible to put into words. We want every patient or parent of a patient in this situation to have that same kind of hope. You can give someone a second chance at life by completing the simple process of getting registered with the Be the Match organization. It’s simple, it’s free and you could save someone’s life.
With gratitude,
Jeff and Jennie Hilliard

Gabe, you truly are a brave person. I’ve got many friends at St. Jude, some of which were fighters, but couldn’t beat it, but thankfully, many more who have beaten just what you’re going through. I have a feeling that God is keeping an eye on you, dear. You’re gona be just fine, I know it!(:
Love and hope,
Christina Fritchie(:
Hi Gabe,
I haven’t seen you since you were 4 or 5 and you may not remember me. I’m Angela, I’m Buddy Abadie’s oldest daughter and I used to work at Millers RV when you were just a little kid!. I worked there um for maybe 2 1/2 to 3 years or so. I remember when Camden was born, so maybe 6 months or so after that is when I switched jobs. Anyway, I just absolutely cannot believe how grown up you are and when my Dad told me about your situation, I was just floored! I just want you to know that YOU are in my prayers, and also your family!!!

Thanks for helping spread the word, Dave! Your kind support is most appreciated!
Hi Gabe & Family,
I just pulled up craigslist.com to post our future garage sale on there and as I was viewing the other poster’s garage sale ads, I saw yours. Read it, saw your picture Gabe and my heart just skipped a beat! I don’t know you or your family and my family has never heard about your story. I read it and showed it to my 14 & 17 yr. old boys and our hearts are truly touched by your situation/story. I am a single mom and we are in no way rich, but we’ve decided to make a donation after our garage sale next weekend.
Secondly, I’d like to know how to get tested to see if I (mom) am a match, whether for Gabe or another. I will be researching the “HOW to” after sending this e-mail to you. My 17 yr. old Blaine also wants to see if he is old enough to be tested too.
Gabe, we’d like to send you our prayer’s, our love and let you know that you are a very special young man and your story will help change other’s. You and your family must be the GREATEST! You are very blessed and we want to wish you all a very blessed future and let you know that we will be following up and following through.
God Bless You guys and everyone who is helping!
Debbie, Blaine & Russell
Hi, i know you dont know me but i live in Walker and i just read your story, if i can i will get something done, i will be praying for you and your family, God bless you….
Hi, I was wondering if blood type has anything to do with being a possible match? I am O neg….please let me know if this works and if so I will go and donate whatever you need me too. Blood, bonemarrow, whatever. I do not live in Baton Rouge so that’s why I am inquiring. If I can help please let me know. I would love to help if I can!
Michelle
Hi Michelle! Blood type is actually a second consideration for a bone marrow donor. They have told us that Gabe’s blood type could change after the transplant. That seems crazy to us!
Since you are not in the BR area, the easiest way for you to get on the registry may be to go to http://www.bethematch.com. Thanks for your help!
