Fundraisers
It costs the National Bone Marrow Registry $100 to process each registry signup kit, and while this is offset to some extent by federal funding, they don’t have the money to process all of the signups we’re getting and hope to get in the drives we have coming up. That’s why fundraising is so important if we want to help Gabe and the Hilliard family get more people added to the registry.
We had our first fundraiser, a jambalaya / garage sale / bake sale, on February 26th. It was a great success due to the hard work of many people, and it raised enough money to process almost 150 new signups to the bone marrow registry! Our second fundraiser was a Give Back Night at Chili’s in Denham Springs on Monday, March 14th, that brought in another $200 to Be the Match in Gabe’s name! We hope that this will cover most of the 71 new potential donors we signed up at our Denham Springs drive and those to come at LSU! However, we may come up short and there are a few other things you can do to help:
Make a tax-deductible donation to Be the Match in Gabe’s name here! We are within 25% of reaching our goal of $2,000 and no amount is too small (or too large)!
Show your Team GabeStrong spirit with the purchase of a GabeStrong tee for just $10! Email us with how many and which size (adult sizes M, L, and XL are available) and we’ll get you hooked up! We’re willing to mail these to you if you live outside of the area for an additional $5! We also have GabeStrong bracelets in small and large that we’ll give to anyone willing to make a donation.
Other fundraising suggestions? Willing to help take charge of an idea you have? Please let us know!

I’ll offer my “World Famous Caramel Brownies” for the bake sale. Well, they are world famous in my household. And I’ll make something else, too, that’s not chocolate…but I’ll have to search my recipes for some ideas. Maybe lemon squares.
I will be more than happy to bake something for the bake sale and bring some tickets to my work for the jambalaya sale. . .please tell me where I can pick them up so I can get busy!
Thank you, Louise and Laurie! I’ve got y’all down, and Laurie’s already picked up her tickets from me, too — she’s ready to help us get some jambalaya sold! If anyone else reading this can help with donating items for the sale, helping us set up and take down, helping post some flyers around town or get some ads in the local papers, making some signs to post at the intersections nearby — please, leave a comment or click the Volunteer button to send us an email! Thanks so much!
Would love to come the day of the Garage Sale and help. I may be able to bring friends. We’ve done this before so not new to us.
We would come from Ascension Parish. Please contact me regarding getting rid of the leftovers too. I am doing a fundraiser garage sale for St. Jude on April 2nd.
Thanks much, Cindy — you’ve got mail!
I just sent you an email. I would love to help on Feb 26. I would be coming from Ascension Parish with Cindy Savoy.
Put me down for bake sale – cookies. What time do you need them?
Hey Becky -
I spoke with you on the phone the other day. I have a good bit of items for the garage sale and will probably need help (use of a truck or trailer) to haul it to Eastside. I am working on collecting more items.

I’m probably bringing a total of about 6-8 volunteers from Ascension Parish/St. Amant for St. Jude. See you this Saturday!
Posted garage sale flyer on BR General Classified Ads.
Thanks much, Cindy, Sandra, Jo Ann, Chelly, and Nancy!
I added the sale to the Southeast Louisiana Bargains YahooGroup (almost 1600 members):
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/SoutheastLouisianaBargains/
And also submitted it to the community calendar at WAFB.
Becky – a great big hug and a pat on the back from me to you.
And one from me too! I know you are exhausted after this big weekend! But you were amazing! And the team of helpers you rallied was equally amazing!
I posted the sale at the facebook page for Louisiana Special Parents magazine, a part of Baton Rouge Parents magazine. Be sure to LIKE both of the pages if you want up to date information. And you can catch both magazines online at http://www.brparents.com
Once you finish buying up everything at the garage sale, check out the Attic Trash & Treasure sale at the old Mervyn’s at Cortana Mall (1/2 price starting at 11 a.m. Sunday.) It’s for good causes also. However, I have seen items at both places and Gabe’s prices are much better.
Hi there, I am trying to purchase the tshirts ..I went to north Park sat. and must have just missed them…if anyone can help by directing me to the right person selling the shirts I would greatly appreciate it Thanks so much and Gabe is in my prayers!! Keep smiling!!!
Hi Michelle! We have shirts left for sure. I’m not sure what sizes are left after the drive Saturday but there are two boxes. I know there are no youth sizes right now. What sizes would you like?
I would love to get a t-shirt if they are still available! We have a St. Jude Baseball Tourney and I would love to have one to help share Gabe’s Story!!
Thank you tons for all your inspiration!
